The Class:

As you may recall the bead society decided this year to hold two full day workshops using two of our own instructors . The two workshops were to replace bringing in a visiting artist as we have done in the past in the Fall. Francie Broadie instructed a full day workshop in March and Jan Johnson will instruct a full day on October 20, 2018.

The subject of the workshop will be bead embroidery using Silk Shibori ribbon and we will create a Mardi Gras Mask Necklace. It doesn't matter if you have or have not done bead embroidery. Jan will help you learn from the beginning or increase the skills you already have. If you are a beginner you will most likely follow the pattern that Jan has created. If you already have some bead embroidery skills, Jan will help you take the materials in the kit and make your own design. Each student will go home with a folder of detailed bead embroidery instructions as well as the pattern for the project.

Silk Shibori ribbon is expensive so that contributes a great deal to the kit price. In an effort to reduce the cost, Jan is asking you to provide the bead stringing materials. There can be multiple choices for the neckstrap such as: pearls, beads incorporating the colors of the Silk Shibori ribbon, leather, ribbon, wire, just to name a few. By providing your own materials for the neckstrap each student will have a different look for the project and most likely you already have the materials in your private stash.

There will be many Shibori ribbon and seed bead color choices.

At home here's what you will need to provide:

If using beads, approximately 60 - 4mm beads, 2 jump rings, 2 crimp beads, a toggle clasp or clasp or your choice, and 2 crimp bead covers(optional). Fireline 6# test or bead stringing wire. If using something different than beads, you will have to determine your needed materials. You do not need to bring these items to class. You won't get that far in the time allotted.

Here's what you need to bring to class:

All the colors of beading threat that you have including black. (Because of the color choices you will not know what colors you need.) Size 10 and 12 beading needles, pencil, pen, embroidery scissors with small sharp tip, ordinary household scissors. (Thread Zapper - optional.) A piece of cardboard such as a back from a cereal box. A pad for your beads, magnification if needed.
